HCV Wait List
When the Livermore Housing Authority opens a wait list, a notice will be published in the East Bay Times and The Independent newspapers as well as posted to the Livermore Housing Authority website.
The Livermore Housing Authority contracts with AffordableHousing.com to manage housing authority wait lists. This website is the platform for accepting applications, maintaining current information for applicants, messaging and mailing notices to applicants, and selecting applicants for housing. The Housing Authority does not provide position numbers on the waitlist because positions are dependent on local preferences. As of May 2024, there are approximately 1,300 people on the wait list. Generally, the Housing Authority selects approximately 30 names per year. Selection from the wait list is dependent on annual funding and attrition from the program. Annual funding is appropriated annually by Congress.
NOTE: If you are currently on our wait list please visit AffordableHousing.com to keep your application up to date.

How to Update Your Wait List Application
Wait List Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: What is a Waiting List?
A: The demand for affordable housing resources from the federal, state, and local government far exceeds the supply. When PHAs have more eligible applicants than vouchers or other public/subsidized housing openings available, they create waiting lists. Waiting lists make it possible for PHAs to keep records of eligible families for easy access when new resources/vouchers become available. PHAs can choose to keep the waiting list open and accept applications at any time or choose to only open the waiting list for brief application periods. Waiting lists are often closed because they are too long - containing more families than the PHA will be able to serve in the near future. A family's position on a waiting list can change depending on what waiting list preferences they meet.
Q: How do I apply to a Waiting List?
A: To apply, create a free account on www.AffordableHousing.com, and then search for open Waiting lists. Any Waiting list operated through our website will allow you to apply directly online. For other open Waiting lists listed on our website, you may need to contact the housing provider directly to apply. Once you fill out an application on www.AffordableHousing.com you can use that same application to apply to other open Waiting lists.
Q: What are waiting list preferences and how do they affect me?
A: Since the demand for housing assistance often exceeds the limited resources available to PHAs, long waiting periods are common. Each PHA has the discretion to establish local preferences to reflect the housing needs and priorities of its particular community. Preferences include characteristics like families experiencing homelessness, veterans, and victims of domestic violence and natural disasters. Families who qualify for any local preferences move ahead of other families on the waiting list. PHAs may also limit the number of applicants that may qualify for any local preference.
Q: How do I update changes made to my application?
A: It's important to keep your application up-to-date. Applicants should update their application anytime there is a change in family composition, address, phone, email, income or waiting list preferences. If a housing agency is not able to reach you, your application may be removed from the waiting list. To make changes to your application, log into your account on www.AffordableHousing.com and update changes to your application. Updating once will update your application on all waiting lists you've applied to through www.AffordableHousing.com.
Q: How long is the wait for a Section 8 Voucher?
A: Due to the high demand for housing assistance, waiting lists are generally very long. It could take years for an application to come to the top of a list. Each PHA may give an estimated wait time and/or actual placement on the waiting list at their own discretion. The availability of this information will vary depending on any given PHAs waiting list preferences. Currently the Livermore Housing Authority Section 8 wait list has over 1,300 applicants on the wait list. The LHA typically selects approximately 100 names from the wait list each year.
Q: What should I do while I wait?
A: While you wait to reach the top of a waiting list, you can search for other open waiting lists on www.AffordableHousing.com and/or sign up to receive alerts when closed waiting lists re-open. AffordableHousing.com lists open waiting lists for a range of affordable housing programs - from Section 8 Vouchers, to Public Housing, and tax-credit housing. You may also search our nationwide database of open below-market rental units available now. Remember to:
- Update your contact information regularly;
- Keep your application information up-to-date;
- Sign-up for SMS/text message notifications so you can respond immediately;
- Look out for "Updates Required" messages so you don't lose your place on a waiting list.
Q: How do I check my status on a waiting list?
A: It is important to check on the status of your application from time-to-time to assure that it is still active on the waiting list(s). Inactive application may be removed from a waiting list by a housing agency. To check the status of your application, log into your account on www.AffordableHousing.com and view your application status for all waiting lists you applied to through our site. If you were removed from a waiting list, you may be able to instantly re-apply online.
Q: What if my application was removed from the waiting list?
A: If your application was removed from a waiting list, you may be able to instantly re-apply online. If you want more information on your removal, please contact the PHA that removed your application from their waiting list. You can challenge the denial of a Section 8 voucher through an appeal process. Please note that each PHA may have varying policies on appealing a removal from the waiting list. You may call the main number at (925) 447-3600 or email frontdesk@livermoreha.org.
